The Styrian fire brigade in Raaba-Grambach has been battling a fuel oil leak in a stream for days. The damage to the environment cannot yet be estimated.
A hiker saw traces of oil in the Raababach on Thursday and alerted the fire brigade. The result was a large-scale operation for the emergency services. Oil barriers were installed and leaking wells in a company’s rainwater sewer were plugged. During a check on Friday, the environmental alarm had to be called again.
dam built
The water level had risen overnight and ice floes had formed. In consultation with the chemical alarm service of the state of Styria, the fire brigade built a dam to strengthen the seal at the exit and a makeshift oil separator.
An attempt is also made to remove the leaked oil with a binder. Because it always freezes at night, this will take several days. It is still unclear how much oil has actually flowed into the stream and what the consequences are for the environment.
