After several serious attacks on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin has replaced his top navy chief.
Admiral Alexander Moiseyev (photo below) has been appointed acting Supreme Commander of the Navy. He succeeds Nikolai Yevmenov, state news agencies RIA Novosti and TASS reported on Tuesday.
They showed photos of the inauguration ceremony in the port of Kronstadt, near St. Petersburg.
Moiseyev served on Russian nuclear submarines for more than 29 years. In 2018 he was appointed commander of the Black Sea Fleet and in 2019 of the Northern Fleet. He is the recipient of Russia’s highest award: Hero of the Russian Federation. The base of the Black Sea Fleet has always been the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014 in violation of international law.
The area of operations of the Black Sea Fleet is limited
Although Ukraine no longer has a functioning navy, it is estimated that it has managed to damage or sink around 25 Black Sea Fleet ships in the two years since the Russian invasion began. That’s almost a third of the fleet’s inventory. Missiles, drones and, most recently, remote-controlled explosive boats have been used.
This threat has forced the Russian Black Sea Fleet to largely limit itself to the eastern part of its area of operations, the British Ministry of Defense wrote in its daily intelligence report on Tuesday.
