Stefan Schachner, chief of general surgery at the military medical center in Stammersdorf, amputated the arm of an earthquake victim and saved him. Our Viennese of the week.
For someone to grab a man’s arm to be celebrated as a hero is probably unusual. But in this particular case, military doctor Stefan Schachner saved the life of a Turk in the ruins of Hatay. Because only after the amputation could the person trapped under the concrete rubble be freed.
The sports doctor is a full-time surgeon at the Vienna Medical Center East. But the doctor, born in Burgenland in Sieggraben, has another mainstay in Vienna: he is chief of general surgery at the military medical center in Stammersdorf.
Various assignments abroad
The doctor captain gained the necessary experience for the current, delicate Turkey mission during his foreign assignments in the Golan, in Kosovo, in Bosnia-Herzegovina and in Mali. And in his spare time he also supports the Burgenland volunteer Florianis as a doctor of the state fire brigade. Of course, his heart beats first and foremost for his family. After all, the 47-year-old doctor is the father of four children.
