The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, on Monday explicitly warned against new attempts to disrupt the political situation in the country. The pro-European president thus officially confirmed a Russian plan to destroy democratic order in her country, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke about last week.
The first attempts of this kind had already been made in the fall in the context of the country’s severe energy crisis, but now the “new plans made available by Russia’s Ukrainian partners” envisage “mercenaries disguised as civilians” to attack Moldova getting into “Violent riots” against authorities and even hostage taking, Sandu explained.
The plan, intercepted by the Ukrainian secret services and confirmed by their country’s intelligence services, includes information about the entry rules for Russian, Belarusian, Serbian and Montenegrin nationals in Moldova and relevant instructions.
“bring about a change of power”
In fact, the plan is aimed at bringing about a “change of power” in Moldova by the arrived mercenaries, with the support of “internal groups” around the two fugitive Moldovan oligarchs Ilan Shor and Vlad Plahotniuc and some war veterans.
“But the Kremlin’s plan won’t work”
The documents intercepted by the Ukrainian partners would show “good on-site documentation, including the intended locations” and appropriate logistical preparations, Sandu said. However, the Moldovan authorities are determined to keep the situation in the country under control, the president stressed. She therefore assures all citizens that the Kremlin’s plan to “bring violence into our country” will not work, Sandu continued.
