After a rockfall in Upper Austria, a road is built to recover bodies

Date:

After the fatal stonefall in Steyr in Upper Austria, which killed two excavator drivers last week, the clean-up work is now starting. The two largest chunks have been or are being removed and the bodies of the two victims will be recovered soon.

After the catastrophic rock fall last Wednesday, the two stone blocks under the Christkindlweg are now being dredged away. A company from the Steyr area has been working since Sunday with various excavators and a truck-mounted crane on behalf of the Federal Office for Torrent and Avalanche Control. The devices are secured with a lattice basket and also hang on a chain – in case tons of heavy rock masses come loose again.

Safety comes first
The western boulder has already been removed and work is underway on the eastern boulder. An access road is being built in the lower part of the accident site so that the bodies of the two workers killed in the accident can be recovered. “The safety of people is always an absolute priority,” says Mayor Markus Vogl of Steyr.

During work on a cliff Wednesday morning, a 3,000 cubic meter boulder came loose and thundered down. All help came too late for the 31 and 64-year-old excavators from Carinthia, they were buried. Ten people living in houses below the slope had to be evacuated. They stayed with relatives or in a nearby inn.
