Anyone who thinks that the tick season starts with high temperatures is wrong – because we’ve been in the middle of it for a long time! We spoke to a biologist about why ticks are now also present in winter, what they can withstand and which new species have settled here!
“Because there are now only mild winters left due to climate change and the colder months are limited to December and January due to the time axis shift, it has become normal for ticks to wake up from hibernation as early as February. Because they hibernate in the ground, high temperatures below zero no problem for the animals thanks to the protective snow cover,” explains the Carinthian biologist and director of the ECO team Christian Komposch in the interview with “Krone”.
