Strong increase – 2022: More speed demons caught than ever before

Date:

For the first time in one year – in particular in the previous year – more than six million speeding offenses were recorded. Also, more drug traffickers were registered in 2022 compared to the previous year. Unfortunately, the lack of safety for children in the car was again a major problem last year. The number of seat belt offenders, on the other hand, remained virtually the same.

  • A total of 6,120,825 speeding offenses will have been reported or issued as a criminal order by police in 2022, it said on Wednesday. About 5.1 million of these were measured by radar equipment, another about 650,000 vehicle drivers were caught with laser measuring devices, and about 350,000 by civilian patrols, section control systems, or other forms of surveillance. This means an increase of 19.7 percent compared to 2021.
  • 1,768,730 road users had to undergo alcohol checks, an increase of 27.4 percent. The number of associated advertisements increased by 15.4 percent from 28,498 (2021) to 32,875.
  • 7,499 drivers were caught driving under the influence, a further increase of 18.3 percent. According to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), this is also due to improved training of the executive in the use of the saliva pre-test devices used in a pilot project and the operational use of medical officers in priority actions.
  • An increase (plus 8.8 percent) was recorded in complaints about inadequate child safety measures: 7,013 reports also led to a reservation in the reservation system.
  • In 121,883 cases, the police found that the required safety distance when driving in tandem was too small – an increase of 16.2 percent.
  • Seat belt violations remained virtually the same at 88,394.
  • 130,540 drivers were caught using the phone while driving or received a warrant.
  • In the heavy vehicle sector, a total of 239,459 declarations and writs of execution were made in 2022 for roadside inspections of trucks and buses, a slight decrease of 2.9 percent. The majority related to non-compliance with the legal driving and rest time requirements (86,421), followed by vehicle technical defects in bodywork, brakes and tires (80,272), overloading (30,828) and insufficient load securing (5,854).
  • 8,188 dangerous goods shipments were subjected to intensive checks (2021: 7,959). In total, transit had to be banned 551 times due to imminent danger.
