On Sunday afternoon, the fire service was able to report “fire out” after a forest fire in the Höllen Mountains near Ebensee in Upper Austria. “The team came off the mountain and luckily nothing happened,” summarizes Stefan Schiendorfer, commander of the Gmunden district fire brigade. The cause of the fire must also be known.
On Saturday, the crew of a police helicopter accidentally discovered the fire and raised the alarm. 140 firefighters, 20 mountain rescuers and two police helicopters were on fire for hours. The fire was largely under control.
On Sunday, another 100 helpers were busy locating and extinguishing possible embers.
“Now we have earned our Sunday”
Shortly before noon, all visible embers were extinguished. “Now we have earned our Sunday,” says Schiendorfer, who is very pleased with the cooperation of all involved. The reason was probably a lightning strike in the night from Friday to Saturday.
