Shock win for Iwasa and abandonment for Merhi

Date:

Japanese driver endorsed by Red Bull, Ayumu Iwasa, achieved his first victory in Formula 2, a category before Formula 1. A superb strategy and perfect driving allowed the rookie from Dams to win the French Grand Prix race more than eight seconds behind the chasers.

Théo Pouchaire the most benefited of those with options to win the World Cup. His second position and the sergeant dropout allowed him to gain a foothold in second position and get closer to Drugovich who continues to lead with 173 points.

The start became the main point of the race. Logan Sargeant didn’t get off to a good start, which Iwasa and Doohan took advantage of to pass him without a problem. Jack Doohan managed to take the lead in the first meters, but he was too close to Iwasa and on the Mistral straight he overtook him.

He hadn’t finished the first lap when the first and only safety car of the race had to start. Marcus Armstrong was left standing at turn fourteen and at the same time as Marino Sato. Reuniting, many drivers took the opportunity to go through the pits before restarting the race with good start from Iwasa, where he was able to distance himself from Doohan by more than a second.

At the end of the first third of the race the stops started and all eyes were focused on the problems that seemed to be in the pits. First is Roberto Merhi. The Spanish rider was left standing after the change and was unable to restart the race, the same thing happened moments later to Sargeant.. In the end, Doohan also suffered a bit of a disaster, as once he had made the change and was ready to go, he had to wait for traffic in the pits.

When everyone changes tires, the Australian Virtuosi Racing driver slipped from the Pourchaire and reaching the Mistral straight he decided to throw himself on top of it. This expectation caused him to dig the wheels in the curve, which caused him to spin. This mistake caused him to lose position with Pourchaire and his partner Vesti, in addition to losing time with Drugovich who came to set the best times.

});

In the final laps, Doohan was in a difficult situation, the tires no longer gripped, partly due to a mistake made and Drugovich at the wheel. With just three laps to go there was a great battle between the two with the current world leader finally getting the upper hand and allowed him to be in fourth position behind the two ARTs.

Iwasa crossed the finish line more than eight seconds awaythus closing his first victory in Formula 2. In this ninth round Théo Pourchaire and Vesti They join him on the podium and have just five new destinations ahead of them with an increasingly tough world championship.
