According to the United Nations Organization for Migration (IOM), a refugee tragedy has occurred off the coast of Libya. A ship with about 80 people on board had an accident, IOM reported on Wednesday.
So far, the Libyan Red Crescent and local police have recovered eleven bodies. 62 people are still missing and presumed dead. Seven people managed to make it back to shore under the most adverse conditions and were treated in hospital. The ship departed Tuesday, it said.
More effort required
IOM estimates that more than 130 people have lost their lives this year trying to escape from Libya across the Mediterranean. In 2022 there were a total of more than 1450 deaths.
IOM spokeswoman Safa Msehli spoke of an “unbearable situation”. According to her, further efforts are needed to increase search and rescue capabilities. In addition, safe migration routes should be set up to prevent dangerous transport by sea.
