The M1 Abrams main battle tank is a weapon system from the 1980s, but – with multiple upgrades – is still the backbone of the US armored forces. An AI upgrade that retrofits intelligent image recognition and target acquisition should now make the M1 fit for the future. But other weapon systems are also suitable for such updates.
The AI tank is being tested by the US military: The US armed forces have equipped an M1 Abrams – see video – with a sensor structure placed on the turret, looking out in all directions for enemy forces. The footage is evaluated by a computer system intended to aid in the simultaneous acquisition and engagement of multiple targets. But the high-tech structure isn’t the US military’s only AI joker.
