At least 18 immigrants have died from suffocation in the truck they were trapped in, which was left behind about 25 kilometers from Sofiaaccording to sources at the Bulgarian Ministry of the Interior.
Bulgarian police found 40 people in the vehicle, 18 of whom had died of suffocation, locked in a dummy compartment under a load of wood. Bulgarian media reports that another 12 people were found alive outside the truck.
According to statements by some survivors, for unknown reasons, the smugglers simply abandoned the truck and escaped.
The Emergency Medical Relief Service has notified the bTV station that the rest of the truck’s occupants have been transferred hospitals in Sofia and that 14 of them are in critical condition.
“They have not been fed for several days, they are suffering from dehydration and have several injuries all over their bodies. I cannot say what caused it,” Bulgarian Health Minister Asen Medzhidiev said after visiting some of the injured. He has also claimed they suffered from symptoms of suffocation and hypothermia.
“We assume that the immigrants have been transported of the border between Bulgaria and Turkey to the area around Dragonman city and then cross over to Serbia,” said an interior ministry source.
The police have indicated that they are all migrants are men, between 15 and 25 years oldand what is supposed to be Afghan citizens.
According to the Nova TV station, this has already been the case arrested at least one person related to the facts. That source notes that the driver or drivers left the vehicle on a rarely traveled rural road and escaped when they realized some of the refugees had died.
Authorities are investigating whether the load of wood they were hiding under slipped and crushed the people in hiding.
