Including a child – Three people rescued from rubble in Antakaya

Date:

Nearly two weeks after the earthquake, three people were rescued from the rubble of a building in Antakaya, southern Turkey, on Saturday. A video showed the helpers taking a man and a woman on a stretcher to an ambulance. A child has also been treated.

The broadcaster TRT initially gave no further information about the identity of the rescued. The report has not been independently verified. Humans can typically survive without water for only about 72 hours. According to doctors, buried people who are still being rescued must have found some sort of water supply in the rubble.

Twelve days after the tremors in the Turkish-Syrian border area, countless people are still missing. More than 46,000 people lost their lives, according to official figures, 40,642 in Turkey and 5,900 in Syria, where the number is only updated irregularly. According to the authorities, about 264,000 apartments have been destroyed in Turkey alone.

Survivors probably dependent on aid for months
The survivors will need help for months because of the destroyed public facilities and residential buildings, World Food Program (WFP) director David Beasley said. However, his organization will run out of money in about 60 days. “Our mission alone costs about $50 million (equivalent to $46.64 million) per month for earthquake relief.”

Meanwhile, Hezbollah, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is sending aid to Aleppo in the earthquake zone. The Lebanese Shia militia said on Saturday it would deliver 29 trucks with blankets, heaters and milk powder for babies. Fighters from the Iranian-backed organization from Lebanon played a key role in the Syrian war to keep the government there in power.

Rebels obstruct aid
However, according to Beasley, aid to Syria has been hampered by rebels in the northwest of the country. The WFP boss announced he would hold them accountable. The region is controlled by insurgents at war with President Bashar al-Assad’s forces.

Twelve days ago, an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale shook the Syrian-Turkish border region. Hours later, a second strong earthquake of magnitude 7.6 followed. The number of confirmed deaths continues to rise. Tens of thousands of people were injured and millions were affected.
