Banned since January – suspected illegal gate hunting in Burgenland

Date:

The association against animal factories (VGT) reports an “illegal blow” in the hunting gate in Strem (Güssing district) on Saturday. Local residents and animal rights activists have therefore documented what happened, the VGT reports in a broadcast. Gate hunting has been banned in Burgenland since the beginning of this year, the transitional period has already passed.

According to the VGT, the hunt was interrupted in the afternoon, but resumed around 1 p.m. The association described the alleged battle as “illegal on several occasions”: From February 1, 2023, no more gate hunts are allowed to take place in Burgenland, by which time the gate fences should have been removed. “But that’s not the case with the Strem hunting gate,” it was stated.

Only on Thursday did VGT chairman Martin Balluch and Groenen member of the state parliament Wolfgang Spitzmüller criticize closed fences at a press conference in Strem. In addition, until February 1, 2023, drive hunts in Gattern were only allowed to take place from early October to late January, the broadcast said.

‘The fence must go’
According to the VGT broadcast, the police have spoken to the gatekeeper. There should be an ad, he said. On the broadcast, Balluch called on authorities to “execute the laws as they are written”: “No more gate hunting, no more hunting gates, the animals must be able to move in and out of the former gate at will.” Balluch demanded, “The gate must be gone and out.”

A gate hunting ban has been in force in Burgenland since the beginning of this year, the transition period ran until February 1. The accompanying law, which was passed in March 2021, sparked discussions between the VGT and the state government. First of all, the country wanted to reverse the 2017 ban on gate hunting before it even took effect. The animal rights activists then submitted a request for a referendum. In the end, however, they agreed on a ban.

case is under investigation
When asked by “Krone”, the state stressed that the authority would investigate the matter: “If there is a violation of the hunting law, there will be consequences,” it said.
