The State Secretary for Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda, Isabel Pardo de Veraand the president of Renfe, Isaiah Taboashave resigned following the controversy of the new metric gauge trains for Cantabria and Asturiassources from the ministry confirmed to EFE on Monday.

The announcement of said relief is made before the Spanish Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Rachel Sanchezmeet the presidents of Asturias and Cantabria this Monday, Adrian Barbara And Miguel Angel Revillarespectively, to explain how errors occurred in the measurements of the contracted trains, which will lead to a two-year delay in their production.

At the beginning of February it was announced that the manufacture of 31 metric gauge trains awarded by Renfe to CAF in 2020, to renew the fleet providing Cercanías and Media Distancia services in Asturias, Cantabria, Euskadi, Galicia, Castilla y León and Murcia, would be delayed due to a problem in the design.

Renfe has contracted these trains in 2020 wrong measurements for the tunnels of the metric rail network (formerly Feve) and once the problem was discovered, solutions were sought, precluding the use of standard gauges, as trains would be built with dimensions smaller than those of the current ones and, therefore, too small for the benefits sought.

Finally, the so-called “comparative method”included in the European standard EN 15273, which consists of using a train currently running on metric railway lines as a reference.
