A five-year-old boy died on Monday during a trip to kindergarten in Mattersburg. The child had left the group and was found in a biotope after a search. It was taken to Wiener Neustadt Hospital but died there, the Burgenland state police reported on Tuesday. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, police said.
A group from a kindergarten in the Mattersburg neighborhood went on a trip Monday morning. The five-year-old must have left the group shortly before noon, after which the police were immediately notified. Seven patrols, a service dog and two drones were deployed.
Bub died in hospital a short time later
The child was then found in a garden pond and CPR was started immediately. However, she later died in hospital. The exact course of the accident is now under investigation, said a police spokesman.
Kindergarten did nothing wrong
Referring to the ongoing investigation, Mattersburg Mayor Claudia Schlager (SPÖ) stressed: “It was a tragic accident, our thoughts are with the family.” However, according to initial findings, the kindergarten “did nothing wrong,” Schlager continued.
The prosecutor’s office in Eisenstadt has now instructed the criminal investigation department to investigate the course of the accident. Now those involved are being asked how it came to this. Further decisions will be made after that, said a spokeswoman.
