Women and girls in North Korea named Ju-ae have been forced to change their names. The background: This is the name of the daughter of dictator Kim Jong-un. The affected North Korean women had just a week to find a new name and have their birth certificates changed.
The bizarre measure reported by Radio Free Asia is not new: in the past under the dictatorship it was forbidden to bear the same name as the ruler or his close relatives. In 2014, North Koreans were banned from using Kim Jong-un’s name.
The broadcaster relies on two anonymous sources from North Korea, one in North Pyongyang and the other in South Pyongyang. The measure is believed to be intended to create a legend about the dictator’s daughter. The bizarre thing is that the citizens do not yet officially know the name of the dictator’s daughter. Basketball pro and confidant of Kim, Dennis Rodman, leaked the name after meeting in 2013.
There are increasing signs that Su-ae will get a position in the North Korean government in the future. The 12-year-old has made a few public appearances recently – she’s also been immortalized on postage stamps. There she was not mentioned by name, but only called “beloved daughter”.
