Up to 200 km/h – violent “monster” cyclone hits Madagascar

After passing the islands of Mauritius and La Réunion in the Indian Ocean on Monday, Hurricane Freddy will hit Mauritius on Tuesday. Météo France called it a “monster”: Heavy waves and wind caused unprecedented damage.

The cyclone will hit the east coast of Madagascar on Tuesday. About 2.2 million people could be affected by storm surges and flooding. The storm is a Category 4 hurricane, with winds exceeding 200 kilometers per hour.

The cyclone, which is one of the strongest ever to hit the southern hemisphere, will hit the African country of Mozambique later in the week.
