On Tuesday afternoon there was a violent incident at a supermarket branch in Vienna-Donaustadt, in which a total of six people were injured – including five police officers and an employee.
At around 1 p.m., a 32-year-old customer suddenly panicked at the cash register and started a violent riot. He also attacked an employee with a slap in the face. The suspect fled shortly afterwards. However, nothing was stolen. When the alerted police officers arrived at the supermarket on Breitenleer Strasse, there was initially no trace of the rioters.
Reinforcement arranged
A short time later, however, officers succeeded in arresting the suspect at the supermarket. However, that did not stop the suspect from attacking the officers. He resisted the arrest so massively that he injured a total of five officers during the arrest. The suspect was only arrested with further reinforcements.
He had to be handcuffed as well as ankle cuffed. All five injured police officers were unable to continue their service. The employee was taken to hospital. It is unclear what caused the 32-year-old to panic – as well as whether and to what extent alcohol played a role.
