A winter storm is currently moving from the west across the north towards the east coast of the US. According to the weather forecast, record snowfall, strong wind gusts, freezing rain and low temperatures are expected. Millions of Americans are preparing for the extreme weather.
The New York Times newspaper reports that the winter storm is expected to disrupt travel plans across the country and potentially disrupt power supplies. The National Weather Service has issued a weather warning for 28 states. In parts of the United States, temperatures can drop to minus 29 degrees Celsius, it is said.
Power outages in parts of California
Strong winds in parts of California already led to power outages on Tuesday. More than 170,000 homes — more than half in the San Francisco Bay Area alone — were without power as of midnight. The National Weather Service office in San Francisco reported that strong winds uprooted trees and damaged roofs.
Snow began in the western United States on Tuesday and fell to just 500 feet above sea level in northern and central California. More than half a meter of fresh snow is expected in some areas, according to US weather services. The snow masses could even reach historic proportions, it is said.
Lots of snow and low temperatures
More than 8 inches of snow is likely in areas from South Dakota to southern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and parts of Michigan. The weather bureau in Billings, Montana, warned on Wednesday for a lot of snow and temperatures around minus 15 degrees Celsius. “It could be a good day to stay home,” forecasters said. “Certainly not a day for travel or outdoor activities.”
Public facilities in Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin remained closed on Wednesday. 60 million citizens of the affected states were asked to stay off the streets. Later in the week, the storm will move towards the east coast of the United States.
