Corona is no longer a problem in large parts of our daily lives. But let’s go back to the winter of 2021: everyone who was infected had to quarantine for 14 days so as not to endanger anyone. A woman from Carinthia would not have adhered to it – that is why she is in the dock on Thursday.
December 2021. A 53-year-old woman from St. Veit, along with thousands of other Austrians, also tested positive for Corona and had to be quarantined for two weeks. She lives in an apartment building. When neighbors noticed that the woman was still walking through the stairwell without a face mask, they raised the alarm. But it is too late for a 69-year-old: the pensioner would have become infected through a contact in the narrow stairwell. He does not survive the disease. On January 21, 2022, he died of global heart failure and acute pulmonary failure, both caused by Covid-19 according to expert opinion.
Responsible for death from Corona?
So is his neighbor responsible for the death? The well-known infectiologist and corona scientist Christof Steininger stated in his report for justice that the 53-year-old and the deceased had contracted the same type of virus and that the man’s death was therefore most likely related to the understandable infection.
Klagenfurt’s public prosecutor, Julius Heidinger, has been investigating for some time – and has reported deliberate endangerment of people through communicable diseases and grossly negligent homicide based on the report. Corona is therefore seen as a “weapon” where another person would have died due to its use.
There was a threat of three years in prison
On Thursday morning, the 53-year-old defendant had to answer to judge Dietmar Wassertheurer at the regional court in Klagenfurt for the actions she was accused of. You risk a prison sentence of up to three years, both charged offenses have the same penalty range – however, if several offenses occur at the same time, the penalty within the legal range may be higher. Whether a verdict will be delivered on the same day depends on the testimony of the woman.
