An elite unit of the Russian army has now suffered heavy losses in the battle for the hotly contested Ukrainian city of Wuhledar in eastern Donetsk region. Marines from the 155th Brigade, tasked with some of the heaviest operations in the war in Ukraine, have suffered “extremely high casualties”, the British Defense Ministry said on Sunday.
Satellite images would show a cluster of destroyed Russian military vehicles southeast of Wuhledar. Those, according to the British, should probably come from the elite unit that recently played a central role in the Russian offensives in Ukraine, according to the daily short report from the Ministry of Defense headquarters in London (see tweet below).
The effectiveness of the 155th Marine Infantry Brigade, considered the elite unit of the Russian army, is said to have deteriorated significantly. The very high losses were compensated with less experienced soldiers, according to London. That limits Moscow’s ability to act. Nevertheless, it is believed that the units will be used in new attacks around Wuhledar.
Almost all buildings in the city are damaged
The stubborn fighting in and around Wuhledar continues. There are only a few inhabitants left in the city, food and water are scarce, almost all houses are damaged. But the Ukrainian soldiers are stubbornly defending the town in the southwest of Donetsk Oblast, which before the war lived mainly from mining. The Russian troops are not advancing.
The British Ministry of Defense has published daily information on the course of the war since Russia’s attack on Ukraine began a year ago, citing intelligence information. With this, the government in London wants to both counter the image from Moscow and keep allies in line. Meanwhile, Russia is accusing London of a disinformation campaign.
