All attempts to catch an escaped wallaby in a forest in the Burgenland district of Güssing have so far failed. The wayward marsupial is just too fast. The helpers will leave again on Monday with the help of a vet.
Austrians often feel pushed to the end of the world when their little “Austria” is mistakenly confused with “Australia”. Aside from the similarity of the name in international usage, there are few parallels with the continent between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, which has been conquered by 50 million kangaroos, twice the population.
Been away for a week
A relative of the kangaroo, a white wallaby, is currently building a bridge between Australia and Austria. The one-year-old “Chepi” has his home in Burgenland, but exactly one week ago – as reported – he escaped from the residence in Deutsch-Bieling, a district of the municipality of Heiligenbrunn, in the district of Güssing.
Since then, the agile marsupial has kept its owners and their helpers on their toes. All tricks are used to quickly catch the escaped wallaby, who is hiding in the nearby forest. But “Chepi” flies with solid jumps and escapes every time.
Escape the helpers
As soon as someone gets too close to the wayward marsupial, it quickly hops the other way and darts around, according to video footage. “Chepi” is simply incredible. Owner Patrick P., his partner, their parents from Styria, who help every day, and friends push their limits in “hunting” the wallaby.
They even went out on Sunday with nets and scoop nets to put “Chepi” in the enclosure – to no avail. Live traps were set before nightfall. Veterinarian Charlotte Klement from St. Michael wants to support the rescue operation on Monday.
