No peace effort – war goals are above negotiations for the Kremlin

Date:

The chance of peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine seems further out of reach in the near future. As Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained on Tuesday, achieving war goals in Ukraine takes precedence over potential peace negotiations.

While major peace demonstrations for a dialogue with Russia took place in Germany over the weekend, the wartime aggressor still seems to have no interest in withdrawing from Ukrainian territory.

Peskow speaks of “important realities”
According to Peskov, for any negotiations, Ukraine must recognize that the four regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson are now also included in the constitution as parts of Russia. “These are very important realities,” Peskov said. However, Russia has not yet fully controlled any of these illegally annexed regions.

In addition, there are certain war goals that Russia is still pursuing, Peskov said. Russia had also stated as a goal the demilitarization of Ukraine, which had been equipped with weapons and ammunition by the West.

Putin ‘open to any contact’
In an interview with the Kremlin-affiliated newspaper “Izvestia,” published Tuesday, Peskov also said that while there were “many statements” by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (and French President Emmanuel Macron) about the war in Ukraine, there were no initiatives on their part to seek talks with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin to find a way out of the situation. “Everybody should know that,” Peskov said. Putin is still open to all contacts.

Real peace talks with Kiev are legally impossible because the Ukrainian government has ruled them out, Peskov said. “In this case, achieving our goals is the most important thing, that’s our absolute priority.”

Demand from Ukraine to Russia ‘absurd’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin by decree and has repeatedly confirmed this. He has presented his own plan, which states that Russia’s complete withdrawal of troops from Ukraine is a precondition for starting peace talks.

Russia, which attacked Ukraine about a year ago, dismissed this as absurd.
