Both Serbia and Kosovo approved France and Germany’s proposal last fall during the EU-brokered standardization talks in Brussels on Monday. But the fronts remain hardened. Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti on Wednesday accused Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic of breaking his word.
In a televised interview Tuesday evening, Vucic said: “As long as I am president, I will not sign or accept any formal or informal recognition of Kosovo.” This also applies to Kosovo’s admission to the United Nations. Kurti then declared that Serbia’s blocking of his country’s accession to the UN was a clear violation of the EU peace plan. “The normalization of relations is only possible if both sides negotiate in good faith,” Kurti explains.
Warning “National catastrophe”.
Following the most recent round of normalization talks in Brussels, the Serbian president has come under criticism from nationalist opposition parties. Former Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, chairman of the Small People’s Party, even accused the president of “high treason” for approaching the conflict. Implementing the Western initiative would result in a “national catastrophe,” warned Jeremic, who served as Serbia’s foreign minister from 2007 to 2012. As chief diplomat, he campaigned internationally against the recognition of Kosovo, which declared its independence in February 2008.
When it comes to Kosovo’s admission to the UN, Serbia has so far been able to rely on Russia as one of the veto powers in the UN Security Council. However, the traditionally good relations between Belgrade and Moscow seem to be clouded lately, even though the Serbian government, despite pressure from the EU, continues to refuse to participate in the international sanctions against Moscow.
