A carnival queen of diversity has been murdered in northwestern Mexico, activists say. “Violeta” was killed by numerous beatings, said a non-governmental organization campaigning for the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people in Sinaloa state.
“Violeta,” whose real name was Juventino Espinoza, was found dead by friends three days after Tuesday’s coronation at her home in the municipality of San Miguel Zapotitlán, local media reported. The car the Queen was supposed to ride on during the Carnival parade was also destroyed before the event and had to be rebuilt.
As the organization “Sinaloa + Incluyente” (Sinaloa with more inclusion) further announced, 22 people had already been killed in Sinaloa over the past ten years because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Two others are missing.
