On Friday there were not only demonstrations for more measures against climate change, but also against environmental rules. Just like in the Netherlands, farmers in Belgium are now resisting such projects. Farmers from Flanders temporarily paralyzed parts of the capital Brussels with 2,700 tractors and other vehicles.
The farmers are against plans by the Flemish government to reduce nitrogen emissions in agriculture. ‘No future without farmers’, according to the posters of the demonstrators. They fear that the number of animals in their stables will decrease drastically or even close completely. Because the manure produced by the animals is a source of climate-damaging nitrous oxide and substances such as nitrogen and nitrogen oxides.
In Flanders – just like in the neighboring country of the Netherlands – there are mainly many large pig farms. Farmers are also demanding that the region release EU subsidies.
In the Netherlands, angry farmers had blocked many roads in the summer with manure heaps, rubbish and some burning barricades. The government criticized the actions as “life-threatening”.
IEA advocates accelerated energy transition
Under the motto “Tomorrow is too late”, Fridays For Future (FFF) called for the twelfth global climate demo on Friday. On Thursday, the International Energy Agency (IEA) also called for an accelerated energy transition because carbon dioxide emissions are still at record levels.
