Almost two days after the devastating earthquake in Indonesia, a six-year-old has been rescued from a collapsed house. The boy was found on Wednesday morning (local time) in the hardest-hit city of Cianjur. The child was still breathing and was treated immediately. It had been under rubble and debris for about 40 hours.
The earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale struck Monday about 70 kilometers southeast of the capital Jakarta at a depth of ten kilometers. More than 268 fatalities have already been counted. Authorities said 151 people were still missing on Wednesday.
The epicenter was near the city of Cianjur. According to the National Civil Protection Service, the 268 killed included many children who would have visited mosques after school.
The work is arduous, landslides and rough terrain hampered rescue efforts. More than 1,000 people were injured, more than 58,000 were left homeless, and more than 22,000 homes were destroyed.
President Joko Widodo visited the disaster area on Tuesday evening and promised financial support for those affected. It is especially important to quickly rescue those who are still buried.
Earthquake-resistant construction standards would need to be applied during reconstruction, as earthquakes would occur repeatedly in the island nation, he warned.
