Concerns about Russia – EU helps Moldova build security sector

Date:

According to a newspaper report, the European Union wants to support the Republic of Moldova in establishing an efficient security sector. To this end, administrative staff from Member States will be sent to Moldova in early summer as part of a new EU civilian mission. Recently, there has been concern about Russian aggression in the country on the border with Ukraine.

EU mission staff should primarily come from justice, police and customs, the “Welt am Sonntag” reported, citing EU diplomats. In addition, the EU also wants to send experts to advise Moldova in the fight against cyber-attacks and disinformation.

The concept should be ready in March
According to the newspaper, experts from the European External Action Service (EEAS) are already preparing a crisis management concept that should be ready in March. It would make proposals on the size, mandate and profile of the advisory mission, which would then need to be unanimously accepted by the 27 member states. In addition to Germany and Romania, the Baltic States, Poland, the EU Council Presidency Sweden, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Portugal were the most important supporters of the mission.

In the Republic of Moldova, which has a population of about 2.5 million, a pro-European government has been in power since February. The former Soviet Republic borders Western Ukraine. Like its neighbour, Transnistria, a part of the country that split off into Moldova, is ruled by pro-Russian separatists and is home to Russian soldiers.

Is Russia planning a coup?
Since the start of the Russian offensive war in Ukraine, concern has grown in Moldova that Russia wants to destabilize the country. President Maia Sandu has accused Russia of planning a coup. Prime Minister Dorin Recean is aiming for EU membership, but that could take years.
