“Kangaroo der Wiskunde” is the largest mathematics competition in Austrian schools. Nine-year-old Matthias Ploesch from Völkermarkt managed to take the state victory in his age category. The primary school student calculates daily, always and everywhere
“I always float in multiple worlds. The first of these worlds is the world of numbers and arithmetic,” Matthias Ploesch blurted out during the “Krone” interview. “Bills are done every day, anytime, anywhere, mostly in the head.”

The nine-year-old took part in the “Kangaroo of Mathematics” competition for the first time, along with more than 100,000 other students from Austria and 7,500 from Carinthia, immediately taking the Carinthian victory in his age group. The student from the 3B class of the Völkermarkt primary school was able to demonstrate his logic in varied, difficult tasks in the competition. “The test was a breeze. All I had to do was do the math, tick the boxes and do a little thinking,” says Matthias, who only needed 30 minutes out of 45 minutes to complete the tasks. “It annoys me that I only got 98 points. Next time it should be everyone,” says the ambitious student, whose favorite numbers are 1 and 99.
By the way: Sandro Blaschitz (VS 7 Landskron) won silver and Niklas Baumer (VS St. Ursula Klagenfurt) bronze in the kangaroo competition.
