A fire at a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh has left about 12,000 people homeless. About 2,000 temporary shelters burned down as a result of the fire – but health posts and educational institutions also fell victim to the flames.
About 12,000 people were left homeless by the fire at Kutupalong camp on Sunday, Bangladesh refugee commissioner Mijanur Rahman told AFP news agency. At least 35 mosques and 21 educational institutions were also destroyed. Rahman added that there were no reports of deaths or injuries.
Cause of fire still unclear
The cause of the fire was initially unclear. The authorities have ordered an investigation. The fire broke out in the afternoon (local time) and quickly ate through the temporary bamboo and tarpaulin dwellings. The fire was under control after nearly three hours.
Largest refugee camp in the world
Kutupalong in southeastern Bangladesh is considered the largest refugee camp in the world. Fires often break out in the Rohingya camps in Bangladesh, where about a million people live in appalling conditions. The Muslim Rohingya refugees come from Myanmar.
Most of them fled the predominantly Buddhist country in 2017 after attacks by the Myanmar army.
