The United States and South Korea announced a ten-day joint military exercise in March. North Korea has accused the US of “deliberately” fueling tensions in the region through this joint maneuver. The ministry “deeply regrets the irresponsible and worrying flexing of the muscle of the US and South Korea.”
“Despite our repeated warnings, the United States is deliberately exacerbating the situation,” North Korea’s foreign ministry said in a statement released Tuesday by state news agency KCNA.
“Violent physical conflict looming”
North Korea blamed both countries for the deteriorating security situation on the Korean peninsula and called for an “immediate end” to the joint exercises. If these continue, Pyongyang “cannot guarantee that there will be no violent physical conflict”.
The South Korean defense ministry released a video on Monday showing fighter jets from both countries conducting a joint exercise off the coast of the Korean peninsula.
Military tensions on the Korean peninsula have escalated dramatically recently. As recently as February, Pyongyang conducted three missile tests within days, including one with an ICBM. Already in November, ruler Kim Jong-un announced that his country would become the “world’s strongest nuclear power”.
