The FBI warns that the Chinese video platform TikTok could evaluate the data of millions of Americans. The app raises many security concerns, the chief of the research firm, Christopher Wray, told the US Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday.
Beijing can use TikTok to control software on millions of devices. In addition, public opinion can be influenced by spreading partisan or manipulative messages, Wray said.
Serious allegations against TikTok
TikTok is currently facing serious allegations. In recent days, governments in the US and Canada, as well as the European Commission, have banned their employees from using the video portal app on their company phones for fear of Chinese data spying.
US steps up pace with ban
A bipartisan bill was introduced by a dozen senators in the US Congress on Tuesday. The law is intended to give Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo the power to ban TikTok and similar foreign providers over security concerns. The app is used by over 100 million Americans.
Group denies the allegations
A company spokeswoman denied the allegations. These would be based on “fundamental misunderstandings”. TikTok is currently improving data security, including setting up three data centers in Europe to store user data locally. In addition, employee access to the data is further restricted and the data flow outside Europe is minimised.
