After a nightly search, mountain rescuers in the Zillertal recovered an injured, drunken tobogganer in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Explosive: it was not the first assignment for the 24-year-old Czech! The mountain rescuers are dissatisfied with the man.
At 04:00 on Tuesday, the mountain rescue team in Zell am Ziller received an alarm. A Czech toboggan star (24) left a cabin in the Hainzenberg ski area with a colleague after midnight and rode down the toboggan run. However, the 24-year-old did not make it to the valley, so his colleague and the innkeeper searched for him – in vain.
Cable car in operation
“The police informed us at 4 am, we are up the mountain with nine men and a dog handler,” says Gerhard Daum, local manager of the mountain rescue service in Zell. “Fortunately, the operator of the ski area has put the cable car into operation.”
The emergency services were able to narrow the search area, but the search was difficult. Just when Daum wanted to warn colleagues from Mayrhofen, who have a drone, dog handler Günther Holaus called. His Belgian Shepherd “Mira” discovered the Czech 30 meters below the ski slope in the forest. The man had fallen from the toboggan run onto the slopes, where he lost control of the sled.

The Czech had serious injuries, luckily there was an ambulance brother in the emergency team who provided first aid. “We then pulled him onto the toboggan run and brought him to the valley station in the Akia,” says Daum. From there, the emergency helicopter flew him to the clinic in Innsbruck.
Czech already “officially known”
The Czech, who works in a restaurant in the ski area, was a “customer” of the Zell mountain rescuers about a year ago. “At the time, we were alerted by an emergency call for a ‘helpless’ person in the ski area,” says Gerhard Daum. The reason for the helplessness was excessive alcohol consumption, the drunkard was the Czech from Tuesday evening.
But that is not everything. Only recently, after midnight, the mountain rescuers searched the ski area for hours for a missing person – in vain. In fact, there was no missing person, the search was initiated by the “official” group to which the 24-year-old belongs.
Application fees from last year are still open
“That makes us angry,” says Daum. Moreover, the Czech has not yet paid last year’s costs. The helicopter flight will certainly not be a bargain now.
