A letter from nine-year-old student Felix of the Hötting primary school in Innsbruck drew Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen to the Tyrolean capital on Friday. In it, the boy had complained that while human rights had been put in the schools, children’s rights were not. The head of state now presented a corresponding board in front of the class. This was followed by a visit to the market hall of Innsbruck.
The visitors of the Innsbruck market hall were amazed on Friday morning. Because suddenly Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen walked through the rows of stands. There were two reasons that brought the head of state to his home state: on the one hand, the opening of the festival in Erl and on the other hand, a visit to the primary school in Hötting was on the agenda.
There the enthusiastic students were able to personally meet Van der Bellen after the award ceremony. Nine-year-old Felix gave the reason to go to school.
Children’s rights board presented to school class
In a letter he pointed out to the Federal President that in the Austrian classrooms human rights were next to his photo, but no children’s rights. The head of state therefore brought a children’s rights sign to the nine-year-old’s class and children’s rights posters to the entire school.
Van der Bellen told the “Krone”: “I was impressed that nine-year-old Felix wrote to me with his request. Because children’s rights are something very important and it is good if not only adults are aware of this. They were introduced in 1989. adopted by the UN and are now valid in all countries of the world. Unfortunately, this does not mean that all children in the world are well. Despite this and for this very reason, children’s rights are particularly important.”
Selfies and regional delicacies in the Innsbruck Market Hall
The subsequent visit to the market hall was at the invitation of the mayor of Innsbruck, Georg Willi (Greens), who showed the Federal President the variety of regional Tyrolean delicacies. “In times of rising prices, the gas crisis and climate change, it is all the more important to rely on regionality and the shortest possible supply chains,” explains Willi. Van der Bellen also had to pose for many selfies.
By the way: a visit to the Kaunertal, where the Federal President comes from, was no longer an option. At around 12:15 pm he took the train back to Vienna.
