Corona rules, but – Hospitals in Vienna adhere to restrictions

Date:

Despite the corona rules, there are no rule changes in Viennese hospitals. Patients in the AKH and in the other hospitals in the care network are only allowed three visitors per day and not at the same time.

This is justified with the positive effects on the patients and with greater safety. “It is important to guide the visitors and limit the number,” says Elena Reghenzani of the Vienna Health Association. “This ensures that our patients can receive reliable visits from their relatives on a daily basis. At the same time, the control also helps to limit the number of visitors so that patients are not disturbed or overwhelmed,” said a statement. Particular attention should be paid to patients who are in rooms with multiple beds.

The rules at a glance:

  • Three visitors per day are allowed per patient, but not at the same time.
  • Negative corona tests are not necessary for admission, but people aged six and older must continue to wear FFP2 masks.
  • Visiting hours are standardized from Monday to Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Last entry is at 4pm. On Wednesdays, weekends and public holidays, patients also have the option of receiving visitors between 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
  • However, there should still be exceptions, for example in neonatology, as Reghenzani confirmed. In special cases, people who have tested positive for the corona virus are also allowed to enter hospitals. For example, when it comes to guiding or visiting underage patients, guiding people at birth and in the context of palliative care and hospice care or other major life events.

Restrictions are met with criticism
Viennese patient advocate Gerhard Jelinek is critical of enforcing the regulations. “Our experience says that several family members often want to come to visit someone at the same time and that having a visitor is very, very positive for the healing process,” says Jelinek in the Ö1 “Morgenjournal”. The exchange with the world outside the hospital is important and also gives those affected an optimistic prognosis.

Criticism also came from the FPÖ. Viennese health spokesman Wolfgang Seidl of the FPÖ described the decision as “a special kind of mess”. “If sick people who are in hospital don’t even get unlimited visits from their family and friends, that’s a disgraceful policy.”
