An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale hit the central Italian region of Umbria on Thursday afternoon. According to the first information from the earthquake service INGV in Rome, the epicenter was in the province of Perugia.

Concerned residents rushed to the streets and the fire department received numerous calls. There were initially no reports of damage or casualties. The university of the city of Perugia is closed, Italian media report. “I heard a strong sound like thunder, then the ground shook violently,” said a witness in Perugia.

In 1997, 9,000 buildings were damaged
As early as 1997, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook the regions of Umbria and Marche. At that time, about 9,000 buildings were damaged in 77 locations, including the Basilica of Assisi. Twelve people died in the rubble or after heart attacks.
