After a complaint: – “Cannabis Church” is not a religion for the Czech Republic

Date:

Since “religion” has no relation to the metaphysical, i.e. what lies beyond the sensually perceptible, and does not deal with existential questions, the “Church of Cannabis” should not be recognized in the Czech Republic. There’s also the assumption that it’s really just used for something else…

The Supreme Administrative Court in Brno (Brno) on Friday rejected an appeal against a corresponding decision of the Ministry of Culture.

prayer aids?
The court doubted the seriousness of the applicants. There is much to suggest that what they really want is to be able to use cannabis as a “prayer tool” in the name of freedom of worship. Possession of cannabis and marijuana is generally a criminal offense in the Czech Republic. In practice, however, small amounts can prevent prosecution. For medical purposes, a doctor’s prescription is possible.

UN Narcotics Control Council warns against cannabis legalization
Meanwhile, the UN’s International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) warns in its 2022 annual report that the legalization of non-medical use of cannabis appears to be leading to increased use and lower risk perceptions, especially among young people. In the US, for example, adolescents and young adults in states where cannabis has been legalized have been shown to consume significantly more, according to one broadcast.

Possession of cannabis is legal in 21 US states, and Denver, Colorado has had a “cannabis church” since 2017 (see tweet below).

According to INCB, there is evidence that the widespread availability of legalized cannabis products reduces perceptions of the risk and negative consequences associated with use. “New products such as edibles or vaping products marketed in attractive packaging have reinforced the trend,” said the Control Board. The INCB believed that this contributed to downplaying the effects of cannabis use by the general public, particularly among young people.

psychotic disorders
In all countries where cannabis has been legalized, data showed that cannabis-related health problems have increased. “Between 2000 and 2018, the number of medical admissions related to cannabis addiction and withdrawal increased eightfold worldwide. Admissions for cannabis-related psychotic disorders have quadrupled globally,” the INCB warned.
