A regional express came to a sudden halt on Friday evening on the Pyhrnbahn near St. Pankraz in Upper Austria due to a fault in the overhead wires on the open route. The train had to be evacuated. 35 passengers were taken in minivans to the nearest train station.
Firefighters were called to St. Pankraz in the evening to evacuate a Cityshuttle push train. A regional express (REX) had come to a halt on the Pyhrnbahn on the open route due to a fault in the overhead wire and was unable to continue its journey. The St. Pankraz Fire Department then turned on lights and cleared some bushes to give travelers a safe route to the road.
Rail replacement service set up
From there, the 35 passengers were taken in small taxi vans to Hinterstoder station, from where the track replacement service began. After about an hour, all passengers had been taken off the train to safety.
Storm damage likely
The cause of the malfunction in the overhead lines has not yet been fully clarified, but it is likely to be storm damage. The ÖBB has set up a track replacement service for all subsequent trains between Klaus an der Pyhrnbahn and Windischgarsten station.
