Styrian animal rights activists are alarmed: the fight against the suffering of stray cats is becoming increasingly hopeless. They appeal to the Styrians: “Get your animals neutered!” Help is also urgently needed.
Every year the same picture: half-starved, almost blind, neglected kittens in terrible condition appear en masse – if they are lucky they will be taken in by generous animal lovers, they will receive medical care, food, a place in the warmth.
“But many are born only to die miserably,” say Ingrid and Michael Stracke of the dedicated animal protection association “Purzel & Vicky” in Vasoldsberg near Graz, who sound the alarm this year: “We are choking on reports of stray cats!” The duo now organize castrations from Monday to Friday, “but the waiting list is getting longer”.
Why is the misery even bigger this year than usual? “The Corona years have led to an explosion in the cat population, because on the one hand fewer strays have been trapped and neutered during the lockdown, and donations have also collapsed.” Ingrid and Michael Stracke make an urgent appeal to all cat owners to have their animals neutered, “Of course the cats too! Any unneutered animal allowed outside adds to the suffering. If every owner complied with this obligation, which is a requirement, a lot of misery would be reduced.”
Volunteers are also urgently needed to catch and transport stray cats for sterilization. “These are then left out where they are in place. If that is not possible, we are also urgently looking for Styrians who can regularly provide food for the stray cats in their yard.”
