Spain hopes EU countries reach an agreement to reduce gas use

Date:

The energy minister has said Spain is ready to help, but that help “could come in different ways”. The Spanish government is of course against forcing consumers and companies to reduce their gas consumption.

Spain hopes that the Member States of the European Union Come to an agreement to reduce the use of natural gas in winter by less than 15% and on a voluntary basis, said Energy Minister Teresa Ribera.

The minister added that when someone asks for help “you have to help”. Still, he added that the help “could be in different ways”, but that he believes that “the spirit of cooperation will prevail.”

The countries of the European Union are preparing for approval this tuesday a weakened EU emergency proposal to curb their gas demand, with omissions allowing them to take different national paths to prepare for Russian supply restrictions.

Last week, the European Commission proposed emergency rules requiring every country to cut its gas consumption by 15% between August and March. For now, the target would be voluntary, but the Commission could make it mandatory in the event of a supply emergency.

The Spanish government is resists being forced consumers and businesses to reduce their gas consumption, arguing that the country has invested heavily in infrastructure for importing and re-exporting natural gas to the rest of the EU.
