ORF funding – majority in favor of household levy instead of broadcasting money

Date:

Much remains open in the debate on the future financing of the ORF. A survey commissioned by the public broadcaster shows that the majority of Austrians would like to see a household contribution that is no longer only linked to recipients.

According to the Integral survey, which interviewed 1,000 people, 58 percent of participants say that the elimination of the device license fee is good to very good. 75 percent of those surveyed between March 3 and 8 (from 16 years) very important (38 percent) or rather important (37 percent). 56 percent strongly or somewhat agree that a household levy also protects programs and content that cannot be covered by private providers.

Interestingly, in a similar survey by the Unique Research institute at the end of February, a majority of the respondents were still against the household levy. At that time, only a third supported the new variant.

Digital novella also requested
This time it was also asked how the population felt about the digital change that the ORF has long been asking for, which should ensure that content is available in the TVThek for a longer period of time and the possibility to be able to offer content “online only” and offer “online first”. 73 percent consider an extension of the collection time in the ORF-TVthek beyond the current seven days as very or fairly good. Just over half would like the ORF to also make programs that can only be viewed online.

“For the ORF, this high level of public trust is a mission to become even more digital, efficient and Austrian as a broadcaster,” ORF Director General Roland Weißmann said in a broadcast on Monday. According to the ORF boss, the budget levy and the digital amendment would ensure “sustainable funding and sustainability of the ORF”. But he also stressed that this does not change the fact that the ORF continues to follow an austerity course.
