The presidents of the Atlantic Arc claim the creation of a macro-region

The aim would be to give visibility to the Atlantic region in which the different levels of government participate on an equal footing: European Union, Member States, communities and regions.

Euskadi, Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria have established one Atlantic macro region to promote the Atlantic axis. For example, Lehendakari Urkullu and the presidents of the other three communities have proposed the creation of a working and meeting forum that articulates, unites and gives visibility to the Atlantic region and in which the different levels of government participate on a permanent basis: European Union, Member States, Communities and Regions.

As Urkullu has explained, it is planned that during the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the Union in the second half of this yearthe European Council mandates the Commission to develop a macro-regional strategy for the Atlantic.

The meeting dealt with issues related to rail links between the Iberian Peninsula and the European continent via the Atlantic area, as well as other issues related to the various transitions such as energy, digital or socio-demographic.

The meeting was convened by Urkullu in his capacity as President of the Atlantic Arc, and was attended by Presidents Alfonso Rueda (Galicia), Adrián Barbón (Asturias) and Miguel Ángel Revilla (Cantabria).
