Poker Due To Sanctions – Kremlin Extends Grain Deal “Only For 60 Days”

Date:

The current agreement on grain exports from Ukraine expires this Saturday. The UN is therefore currently negotiating intensively with Russia to secure further exports. The Kremlin is not against an extension in principle, but it is likely to be limited to 60 days.

Since the agreement between Moscow and Kiev last July, more than 24.1 million tons of grain have been shipped out of the country. The deal, brokered by the UN and Turkey, allows Ukrainian grain to be exported through the Russian-controlled Black Sea. This is especially important because many countries around the world are very dependent on the so-called breadbasket of Ukraine.

Russia plays poker against sanctions
Representatives of Russia and the United Nations are therefore negotiating behind closed doors in Geneva on the continuation of the grain agreement. Moscow is demanding more support for its own exports, which have become difficult due to Western sanctions, among other things. In principle, Russia has “no objection” to a further extension, Deputy Foreign Minister and head of the Russian delegation, Sergey Vershinin, stressed on the sidelines of the summit. However, these will be valid for “only 60 days”, he stressed.

“Our further stance will depend on tangible progress in normalizing our agricultural exports. This includes bank payments, transportation logistics, insurance, unblocking frozen financial activities and ammonia shipments through the Tolyatti-Odessa pipeline.”

Agreement renewed once
Russia had blocked grain exports through Ukraine’s Black Sea ports after launching its war of aggression against the neighboring country in February 2022. As a result, world market prices temporarily exploded and there was a threat of famine because Russia and Ukraine used to be among the most important grain exporters, including to poorer countries.

With the mediation of the United Nations and Turkey, an agreement was reached in the summer that makes controlled export possible. It has since been extended once.
