Eleven people have died in Iran this year and more than 3,500 were injured during preparations and ceremonies for Newroz’s Persian New Year celebrations. The tradition, which dates back to pre-Islamic times, is not only sometimes dangerous, but also a thorn in the side of the leadership of the mullahs.
The current number of casualties refers to the period since February 20, the head of Iran’s rescue services, Jafar Miadfar, told state television on Wednesday. Eleven people were killed on Wednesday night alone.
