According to British intelligence services, the Russian offensive on the eastern Ukrainian city of Wuhledar has probably been slowed down. It is part of a series of failed, extremely costly Russian strikes over the past three months, the British Ministry of Defense said in its daily briefing on Thursday. Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Russian attack was on the verge of failure.
The Russian setbacks are due in part to the successful Ukrainian deployment of a system known in English as the “Remote Anti-Armor Mine System” (RAAM). According to the information, anti-tank mines can be scattered up to 17 kilometers from the launch site. In some cases, Ukraine dropped these above and behind advancing Russian units, causing chaos as Russian troops retreated, the British said.
Ukraine has the fortress in Bakhmut
Meanwhile, separatist leader in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, Denis Puschilin, described the situation in the city of Bakhmut, which has been fighting for months, as “difficult”. There are “no signs of Ukraine withdrawing from Bakhmut,” he said on Thursday. However, the Ukrainian army reported massive losses from the invaders. According to the Ukrinform news agency, 1,040 Russian soldiers were “eliminated” within a day. Zelenskyy said on Wednesday night that Western arms supplies and other aid are “particularly important now that there is a sense that Russian aggression is approaching the point where it can break.” But constant pressure on Russia is necessary, he demanded.
In his speech, Zelenskyj addressed the decisions taken on Wednesday at another meeting of the so-called Ramstein format. Arms deliveries to Kiev are coordinated through this format – named after the US air base at Ramstein in Rhineland-Palatinate, where several meetings with Ukraine take place. The Ukrainian head of state said it had decided to supply ammunition and anti-aircraft weapons. The number of reports of ammunition shortages on both warring sides had recently increased. Selenskyj also explicitly thanked Denmark, which is setting up an aid fund of some seven billion kroner (940 million euros) for Ukraine.
Several governors were fired
Zelenskyi had previously dismissed the governors of the Luhansk, Odessa and Khmelnytskyi regions. According to the decrees published on Wednesday, the dismissals of Serhiy Hajdaj, Maxym Marchenko and Serhiy Hamalij were at their own request. It is rumored that Hajdaj will soon become ambassador to Kazakhstan. The 47-year-old had been head of the administration of the difficult eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk since October 2019. After the Russian invasion over a year ago, it largely came under Moscow’s control.
Former governor wants to return to the army
Marchenko announced that he would return to the army. “I think I should do what I do best: kill enemies and fight for the future of Ukraine,” the 40-year-old said on his Telegram channel. The colonel had commanded a brigade before being named governor of the Odessa region in March 2022. Hamalij, 43, has been the head of the administration of the western Ukrainian region of Khmelnytskyi since December 2020. For the time being, nothing was known about his future or about the filling of the vacant posts.
