When you travel, safety at the destination you are traveling to does not play an insignificant role. If you’re traveling alone, it’s even more important not to worry too much about your own safety on site. If you believe an American study, women traveling alone in Austria hardly have to worry about their safety. Only one country managed to knock us off the top spot.
So-called solo travel has become a real trend, especially in recent years. No wonder, because when you’re traveling alone, you don’t have to worry about anything or anyone, you don’t have to compromise when planning – and it’s easier to jettison plans when other options arise. Women are also increasingly traveling alone.
Reason enough for the luggage storage app “Bounce” to conduct large-scale research to determine which countries in the world are safest for a woman to go on vacation alone.
The evaluation was based on these criteria
34 of the most popular travel destinations were included in the survey and each categorized into eight factors:
- Percentage of women who have already been victims of violence
- Female murder victims per 100,000 inhabitants
- security index value
- Percentage of women who feel safe at night
- attitudes to violence against women
- Domestic Violence Legislation
- Global Gender Gap Index
- General safety assessment
Only Ireland is ahead of Austria in terms of security
Most data comes from authorities or the OECD. With a score of 7.88 (out of a possible 10), Ireland is considered the safest travel destination for women. This is followed by Austria (7.70 points). We do especially well with women who feel safe alone at night (79 percent).
negative aspect
13 percent of Austrian women indicate that they have already been the victim of violence (for example by a partner or ex-partner). In Canada, the value is only 1.9 percent. Also very safe for women: Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal and Canada.
A woman shouldn’t be here alone
The most unsafe countries for women traveling alone are Colombia, Costa Rica, the US, Chile and Turkey. The reasons are of different nature. Four out of 100,000 women are murdered in Colombia. In Turkey, 38 percent have already experienced violence. 13.3 percent of people in Turkey, 11.1 percent in Colombia and 11 percent in the US find violence against women justified.
These are just a few more reasons why women can make Austria more attractive as a destination for their next vacation. For anyone daring to step into “solitude” for the first time, city breaks offer the ideal entry into the solo traveler scene. With tours of old towns and rests in small cafes, it never gets boring on your own. If you don’t want to do without relaxation even without company, you are probably better off in a club complex with a daily wellness program.
To come to terms with yourself on a spiritual level, unusual yoga retreats offer the opportunity to explore your own “me.”
From couchsurfing to yoga holidays
If you prefer to do without luxury and relaxation and instead pursue the adventure, you can travel all over Europe via Interrail by train – while protecting the environment at the same time. Traveling alone doesn’t mean staying lonely: couchsurfing, bartering and the like will bring you into contact with the local population, earn extra income and make friends.
Finding a partner is also made a little easier for solo travelers. A real industry has sprung up around special single trips, single hotels or single cruises. True to the motto: travel alone, but not alone.
