Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will stand for re-election in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituencies at the next general election. The local faction of his party voted for the 58-year-old on Thursday evening. There is not yet a date for the parliamentary elections, autumn 2024 is likely.
There had recently been speculation that the former prime minister wanted to stand as a candidate in a constituency that was considered safe. Whether Johnson will win re-election in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, in north west London, is doubtful. In the last general election in 2019, Johnson won by a margin of 7,000 votes, but the Labor Party is currently clearly leading in the polls.
resigned in July
Johnson announced his resignation in July 2022 after three years as Prime Minister. He was under great pressure, including his dealings with a Conservative MP accused of sexual harassment and partying in lockdown.
The next parliamentary elections must take place in January 2025 at the latest. So far, an appointment in the fall of 2024 is considered likely. Conservative columnist Katy Balls speculated in the Times newspaper that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak could schedule elections as early as spring 2024 given his recent rise in popularity ratings.
