Warn hospitals – there is a risk of supply collapse for the seriously injured

Date:

In Austrian hospitals, care for the seriously injured is in danger of collapsing. There is an enormous shortage of specialists and the bed capacity in hospitals has been greatly reduced. The Austrian Association for Trauma Surgery (ÖGU) warns of this in a broadcast on Friday.

“The result is a drastic reduction in operational capacity in trauma surgery. At least a third of all Austrian hospitals are affected,” warned ÖGU president Vinzenz Smekal.

Profession should become more attractive
The profession of hospital doctor therefore urgently needs to be made more attractive. Critical staffing levels, high workloads and the strict working hours law are forcing more and more doctors into the practiced field, “since a job in a doctor’s office is perceived as easier and the payment as significantly more lucrative”, according to the ÖGU.

“Insufficient compensation”
“Insufficient wages for the extremely challenging round-the-clock work in acute care hospitals, coupled with poor working conditions and overload due to staff shortages, inevitably lead to serious bottlenecks in the care of the seriously injured,” the broadcast said. A deepening of trauma surgical training and adequate reward and service models for acute care for seriously injured patients could help.
