Four flight attendants for the state airline have been arrested in Vietnam for drug smuggling. A spokesman for Vietnam Airlines said on Friday they were accused of carrying banned substances in their hand luggage into the Southeast Asian country on a flight from France. Due to ongoing investigations, the flight attendants are currently released.
According to Ho Chi Minh City Airport Customs, 11.4 kilos of ecstasy and other narcotics, including methamphetamine, were found in their hand luggage on Thursday. The drugs would be hidden in tubes of toothpaste. Vietnam’s aviation regulator has ordered stricter inspections at the country’s airports to crack down on the smuggling of illegal goods by air.
Severe penalties are imminent
Vietnam is known for extremely harsh penalties for drug traffickers. The manufacture or sale of 100 grams of heroin or cocaine or 300 grams of methamphetamine is punishable by death. In August 2022, seven people were sentenced to death for allegedly smuggling 46 kilograms of drugs into Vietnam from neighboring Cambodia. The authorities usually do not disclose the executions that have been carried out.
